I also want to hear more about the stone anvil. I used to live just down the road from Elberton GA where a lot of granite is quarried and worked, and it seems like I've read somewhere that the Vikings used stone anvils on occasion. So if it worked for you, I'll have to look for a big chunk with a polished top the next time I get down that way. Scrap granite has got to be cheaper per pound than scrap steel, right?

Goddard Mentions using Granite for an anvil in the $50 knife shop, and said it worked very well and had really good rebound surprisingly enough.

Thank you all so much for the kind words, hearing those kind of comments from this company brings a warm glow to my insides.
The granite anvil woked pretty well, before I took it home I dropped a ball bearing from 18 inches and had it bounce back into my hand. I put a 1/4 inch bevel on the long sides and a 1/2 inch bevel on the short sides. I did manage to chip the 1/4 inch edge in a couple of spots, but I was swinging pretty hard.
I think I might have to upgrade to a jade anvil (low grade of course). I know from experience that it can take sledge hammer blows. I think it is harder on the hammer than the Jade. (And harder still on the swingers fingers )
Again thank you all for the kind words, I appreciate it.

That would be cool if you carved the jade anvil to look like an English anvil with the horn and all. even a mini one would be sweet.

Hey Roc good idea, I don't think that it would be that hard to do. I was thinking of a 8" square block top with two sizes of beveled edges. But I may have to rethink that plan.

Don't know if the beveled edges would be of much use. An edge blow sounds like it would chip it for sure. If it could take that it is some tough stuff!!!

I've heard that they used jade anvils in ancient China, so it seems like it should work for you Stoneman. It would be pretty cool to have a jade anvil that's anvil shaped though I'd worry about the heel breaking off, think Jade would be strong enough to hammer on even in 2" thin sections? If so that'd be pretty cool since you could even have hardy tools for it.

This is sooo cool. But I'm gonna re-hijack my thread.

Speak up if you never got a knife!

There. I'm gonna assume that everyone's satisfied. Excellent. Back to Jade Anvils.

How do I get one of those, anyway?

Andrew, I know it could take a beating in 2" thick slabs. ( I have seen grown men dancing on 1/2 " thick table slabs) It is tough stuff.
Roc, beveling the corners, helps prevent them from chipping. A sharp edge will chip, but a rounded corner will take a blow.

My Present has Arrived!
In my mail today, was a stunning curvy piece of art from Ron Ellis aka ROC aka Hammerdownnow. It has such neat flowing curves you could stare at it for hours.
I'll show the pic Roc has posted, because I don't have a Digital Camera.

Thanks Roc!

I finally gat around to scanning in a pic of the KITH knife I got from Jae. It's 1095 with cocobolo slats and sinew wrap for the handle. A neat little NT knife!

(The specks and smudge are scanner dust and fingerprints.)

Thanks for all the kind words guys.

I am glad you like it Dean. Glad it made the trip. I see your point about the edges on the jade.
