cloth lining for leather sheath?
Ive been thinking of trying to line the inside of my sheaths with some kind of fabric. One reason is to help keep the acidic leather from staying in contact with the blade .Also I think it might look pretty cool.My question is,what do I do around the edges?Im thinking of using an old wool hunting shirt.Would I just roll the cloth over the edge a little .or do I need to use some kind of "piping"to cover the edge?

Something that helps with the acidic factor is to only use veg-tanned leather. You still woundn't want to store the knife in the sheath however since all leather is hydroscopic and will hold the moisture against the blade.
I have all my sheaths lined but with a softer leather mainly to cut down on the scratches. Gary __________________ Gary ABS,CKCA, ABKA,KGA |

A little dampness in the wool will do as much damage as exposed leather. It will also hold any scratchy grit....forever. Do proper knife maintenance and you won't have a problem. That and what Gary said, don't store your knife in the sheath.

Crex,I never even thought of the grit factor.I guess I was going more for the decorative effect.Sometimes its a relief to have an idea shot down, then I dont have to keep racking my brain trying to figure it out. Thanks!

I've recently lined a few sheaths with rabbit fur, we'll see how well that works

With every knife I sell I enclose instructions of knife care; including not to store their knife in a sheath.
