15N20 or?
Hi Ed
I am curious if steel type can be determined by markings on the steel? While I cannot say that I am a fan of using used, unknown steel, I have about 70 pounds of some steel that I suspect to be 15N20 that I got for the asking. The reason I got it is because I found some markings on the steel that were the same as some 15N20 that I had purchased. The markings are "UDDEHOLM" with 3 circles enclosed in a rectangle before and after. Below that it says "Made in Sweeden" Are these markings unique to 15N20 or is it just the markings of a Sweedish steel company that makes multiple steel types? Thanks for any info Brian |

Thanks Merle! My answer was going to be "likely", but nothing is 100% for sure. The link Merle provided is a good one to bookmark.

I bought some "15n20" from a saw manufacturer that got it from udeholm. The pieces were new with markings you described. I put it into some Damasucs and it had no contrast with the known 1080 I had purchased. I looked at the udehom site and they do sell a 10xx series so i am guessing it was a mix up at the factory. Do a test billet to see if you get any contrast then you can be more sure. better yet send it off for analysis and you would be absolutely sure.

Hi Chuck
I made up a billet and it does have good contrast. I would like to be sure though and am researching for a place that will test it. Brian |

Good idea. I did a search after this thread. Here is a couple I found, http://www.labinc.com/chemical.htm http://www.astonmet.com/gs/procedures.html Don't know anything about either but they looked the best of the ones I called up. __________________ http://www.woodchuckforge.com Avatar, Scott Taylor Memorial Scholarship Knife Photo by Bob Glassman Chuck Richards ABS J.S. |

Hey Chuck
Thanks for the links. I contacted labinc and got a reply back already. The cost is $150 per sample with a turnaround of 2 to 3 days. I have not heard back from the other company yet. Thanks again Brian |

Whoa! That's a lot! Kelly Cupples once gave me a name and price of a lab to check steel, and it was like $35 or so. I wouldn't go sending off $150 until you search some more. I looked and I don't have Kelly's info anymore, sorry.

I agree. $150 is a bit high. You can also contact Chuck Bybee at alpha knife supply. He has an outfit that does them also. The more he sends in the lower the cost. I was told about $25/sample but that is not a firm quote. I will be looking also in the near future. With Chuck being sick and Blade etc he has not had time to send out the 4 samples I sent him.
Good Luck and let us know what you find out. __________________ http://www.woodchuckforge.com Avatar, Scott Taylor Memorial Scholarship Knife Photo by Bob Glassman Chuck Richards ABS J.S. |
