Hand carved N/S bolsters?

When makers state that they use hand carved N/S bolsters what kind of tools are generally used? I'm attempting the construction of an Italian style stiletto and any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hand carved bolsters

They basically use any tool an engraver might use. Mostly files, but could go as far as chasing hammers and gravers for manual tools to Dremels and Foredom tools for powered tools. The powered tools would likely be fitted with carbide burrs in various shapes and sizes...
