No Chat Room this week, sorry!
The power company out here has scheduled a power outage from 12 noon to 8 pm this Sunday which encompasses the hours we normally use for the Chat Room get together. No electricity, no computer. I'll probably be curled up into a little ball of internet withdrawal by 8 pm. You guys can go ahead and open the room if you want to but I'll have to miss this one. See you there next week ...

I do live in the Stone Age pretty much. But, I do have a battery powered Android tablet. That doesn't help much though because without the grid I can't get to the internet since my satellite system is not battery powered and I no longer have a dial up account. Even the phone system will collapse if the power is out for more than 12 hours because that's as long as the phone company's backup batteries will last. There's no cell service in a 30 mile radius of this place either. I have a generator but the satellite system doesn't seem fond of the fluctuating power that provides.
If some of you guys would like to set up a system of jungle drums or maybe smoke signals we could probably work around this situation. Actually, smoke signals are not going to work either because I live in a forest and currently there is a burn ban in effect. An Alpenhorn system might be a good substitute or we could all try learning to yodel ....

Ray, put your satellite system on a UPS backup. It will act as a nice big capacitor that will even out the power flow and should take care of the problem.

The Chat Room generally runs for 3 hours. My UPS backup system is good for about 5 minutes and I doubt I could afford one that would last 3 hours. Anyway, I have a generator but by the time all the other stuff that needs electrical support is covered what's left isn't very good for the computer.
Be that as it may, I do expect to have the Chat Room going tomorrow as per our usual schedule ...
