Drill size for 1/8" pins
Hi
This is my first post. I am a wood carver and have made a few fixed blade carving knives but now want to make a folding carver. I have sent for Chris Crawford's DVD on building a slip joint but don't have it yet. I also have some 3/32 " 01 steel on the way. I plan on taking apart a cheap knife similar to what I want to use as a pattern. I have a metal cutting band saw , a 1"x42" belt sander and drill press. I will send out the blades for heat treating. The questions I have are: 1) What size hole do I drill for a .125 (1/8") pin. 2) what reamer do I need and where can I get one on line. Thanks in advance for any advice. I am really enjoying this site. Keith Stewart |

#40 drill bit will allow an 1/8 inch pin to slide through..

Varies a bit on what you have to do to clean up the pins. Pin stock varies minutely so this also depends on how tight a fit you can work with. Drill the hole slightly undersized, #31 is .1200" and ream to size. I use reamers from .1260", .1255", .1250" and .1245" depending what the cleaned up pin comes out to be. There are other sizes available.
MSC is a good place to order from. http://www.mscdirect.com/browse/Hole...navid=12106128 __________________ Mike |

Keith,
You can find all the numbered and letter drills you need at MSC (Manhatten Supply Company) A great resource for knifemakers. http://www.mscdirect.com/ Enjoy the journey, __________________ Brad Johnson LTC, Ret KMG since 1991 [IMG][/IMG] http://bradjohnsonknives.blademakers.com/ |
