Some results
Video of my 5 gallon air tank forge.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSpbV...ature=youtu.be 2 inchs of insowool, refractory over that and 2 firebricks inside The blanks are 1095 x 1/8, I can cut blanks without a problem. It's getting the primary bevel on the blade that's giving me problems. I know it comes with practice. [IMG][/IMG] These two I ground beyound recognition, I know if you are not making mistakes you aren't learning. Last edited by DonFG; 02-22-2013 at 10:58 AM. |

The one you "ground beyond recognition" looks like it may have been ground with a dull belt. The belt could be dull because you used it on several other jobs before or it could be a brand new belt but you didn't knock the sharp corners off the blade before you started grinding thus shearing off most of your grit before you got to use it. And, of course and as you said, practice is required.
All that having been said, you're not giving yourself a fair chance with those blades. Those are some pretty cool designs you have there but they are beyond your current skill level (apparently). Those odd curves take a lot of practice to get the hang of grinding them without screwing up. Make a few simple 4" straight blades and learn to grind and finish them before you get into more extreme shapes and I bet your 'luck' will improve quite a bit...with practice ... |

OK, I am confused this looks like where Ray has made a response to a thread. However I am not seeing the thread only this response!
I don't see another page to click on or anything like that, soooooooo what's up? __________________ C Craft Customs With every custom knife I build I try to accomplish three things. I want that knife to look so good you just have to pick it up, feel so good in your hand you can't wait to try it, and once you use it, you never want to put it down ! If I capture those three factors in each knife I build, I am assured the knife will become a piece that is used and treasured by its owner! C Craft |

I had a page posted with pics, then edited it. So now someone has to approve the edit.
I think it's a little overkill, I don't see to many sites that do the approval of posts to often |

I can't argue with the 'finally snapped' assessment but there is a thread here. There were also several duplicates of the thread for a while. This seems to happen fairly often when a new guy makes his first post, it's as if they can't see it either. Anyway, the situation should work itself out after Don makes a few more posts.
Hope to see you in the Chart Room Sunday night Ricky. C Craft, there's room for you too if you can make it .... |

That happened to me when I first joined. I made a thread and posted the same thing over and over again because it wasn't showing up. Then... All of a sudden all my posts showed up lol.

It's a method for controlling SPAM, Don. You'll be past that problem before long....

Ray, I'll be there tomorrow night. Glad to see you hadn't gone nuts on us lol
Don, it happened to all of us the first couple days. You will have full privileges soon. BUt like metal99 I did the same thing, makes us look retarded to post the same thing 3 times thinking "What am I doing wrong, nothing is posting" then next you see all your posts show up. But it helps keep spammers out and only lasts a couple days. and as near as I could tell it only affects posts with pictures. |

That's a pretty large interior cavity in your forge for just one burner. Using forced air or venturi torch?
With either it will still eat a lot of fuel and be hard to regulate the temp. I see a lot of hot and cold spots in the video. For smithing it will work but for serious heattreating probably not very well. As Ray mentioned, some of the designs you have chosen make it difficult to learn to set bevels by grinding. You'll learn bevels quicker with the more simple blade designs. Keep in mind "Bad practice will not make you better." __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Thank you for the replies. Yes I do believe the interior is a little large, I have to wait awhile for some more insowool, lost my job last month.
I built a venturi burner and it does heat very well, I added refractory and firebricks inside so it does close it up some. As for the bevels, I'll stick to the two flat blades I have and work on them. |

Sorry to hear about your job. These are difficult times indeed.
If I was headed up to see my g-kids in St.Charles I'd bring you some extra wool, looks like it will be a good ways off due to the gas prices (gotta save up). Makes good sense to stick with simple until you get the basics down pat. I forge my bevels in and only use my grinder(s) for cleaning up profiles and finishing handles. No matter which way you approach this game, there is a lot of hands on practice involved. Keep on truckin! (and hope you find gainfull employment soon). __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
