i,ve been carving these for a number of years and named them penny-bo carvings...they are carved on a wheat penny...this one is " the old blacksmith "..i usually carve about one penny every month or so..

How does carving copper compare to the nickel? Does it require a little different technique? I must have 20 Lb of Wheats that I need to sift through to look for that one that might be worth more than a penny. Thanks

i would rather carve a nickel, if you,re not careful you can cut too deep on a penny..

marcus, i,ve carved so many coins the last ten years that getting the background smooth is just part of carving them and i don,t realize they are really smooth until someone mentions it...i use my gravermax on every carving, but my main tools are two flat hand gravers which i keep super sharp plus i turn my microscope way up to see any low or high spots, scratches, etc.
