First Sheaths

Hi Guys

I'm new to knife and sheath making, just starting off this year. So far I have completed 6 knives and just got finished making sheaths for 3 of them. Chuck's sheath making video, as well as this forum took years off the learning curve. Tips, comments or pointers are welcome.

1st sheath is on the left, 2nd in the middle, and 3rd on the right.

Good, Better, Best. Not bad for a newbie. It looks like you have it by the handle. Can't see much of the knives. You might ought to drag them out of the sheaths and let us see them too! Good looking sheath patterns and made very well also. Just keep it up.

Paul

Thank you for the compliments Paul. I think I'm pretty much maxed out on my attachment limit here so I will post a link to my website where there are more pics of the sheaths as well as the knives.

Thank you for the compliments Luis and bushworker.

Luis, I made the pattern on the 3rd sheath with matting stamps from Tandy. The Craftool stamp #'s are E294-03 (Tandy#66294-03) and E294-04 (Tandy#6629404).
These stamps are very easy to use to get that pattern, you just randomly turn and move the stamp around while hitting it.

WOW! Nice! I'm about due to build my first sheath and kit knife too---for my son for Christmas. Cross fingers. We'll see how it goes.

I have no leatherworking tools at the moment, which will be remedied in a bit, but which basic ones would you recommend for the border creases, and the stitching. Is your stitching machine or hand done? Thanks.

Thanks for the kind words Sorry I took so long to reply, I left to go moose hunting on the 3rd and just got back.

humminboid: The border creases as well as the groove for the stitches are both put in with an adjustable stitch groover (tandy#8069-00). The stitching is layed out with an overstitch wheel (tandy# 8091-00) and it comes with wheels for 5,6, and 7 holes per inch. The stitches on my sheaths are spaced as 6 per inch, layed out with the overstitch wheel and the holes are then drilled with a 1/16" drill bit in a drill press. I use 5 strand Barbours linen thread and 2 needles to do the stiching and then run the overstitch wheel over the stitches when done.

Roosko, I'm a long way from being a leather guru but I always try to do my best and improve along the way.

Thanks for the kudos Mike. I have more knife orders so I will be posting more pics in the next few weeks.

No moose this year hummingboid. The only moose I saw was a cow moose, but only had a tag for a bull or calf . Oh well... theres always next year.
