HF anvils
I know a lot of you guys think that Harbor Freight anvils are probably worse than having no anvil at all, but I just thought I'd mention that their 55 pounders are currently on sale for $30.

Good deal I say. I have on from them(heavier than that though) its good and solid, top doesn't dent like some say they will, its not soft metal... It works.

I have the HF 110 pounder as do several others in Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild. It is a good serviceable anvil for a noob just starting to do some blade forging. The 55 pounder may be a little lite for serious pounding. Somewhere in one of the knife forums, someone has mentioned HF is dropping the current Russian/Chinese 110 pounder and negotiating with an Eastern Europe firm to produce a cast steel anvil of similar weight. I don't know if that is true or just wishful thinking.

It appears HF only carries the 55 lb cast iron anvils now.
However, when doing a search on anvils, I ran across this 2"x8" planishing wheel for $39: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=95367 I couldn't help but wonder how that would work for a homemade grinder with some rubber added to the face. . .I didn't see what kind of bearings it had. |
