Drawers for steel
I would like to put all my various and sundry pieces of steel into drawers to fit under a work bench. I have been thinking of a set of tool drawers or making myself something. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to use for this. Most of my steel is max 36" long . with a fair bit of small damascus pieces as well.

map or drafting paper storage?
I have a set of stackable drawers designed for storing drafting paper, 24" x 36" sheets with a tiny extra bit of space. I think they are 1-1/2" to 2" tall in a set of 5 or 6. They have roller bearing drawer slides as the drafting paper is quite heavy. Try surplus office furniture or auctions.

Drawers sound good but, over time, you may have more steel and more steel types than you have drawers. An alternative (or an addition) that you might consider is some sections of 4" or larger plastic PVC pipe. I've got a number of them secured to my shop wall at floor level and the steel stands in them. The advantage is that it's easy to have one for each type of steel you use as long as you have the wall space. One disadvantage is that short pieces of steel get lost in the taller ones but it's easy to make short holders too or put the short pieces in drawers or bins. Certainly not an ideal alternative but it is a flexible and rugged system and it's cheap .......
