Rubber grips?

Anybody else see these? Apparently they are made from the rubber mats in horse trailers or stalls. Never really thought about using them for that, and we just threw out a whole 1/2" thick stall mat.

Anybody have any experience with them? I can go to the dump and get the mat back if it will make some good handles.

I normally would carry my cold steel with the old rubberized handle for cutting the strings off round bails, and it was nice in the rain. Its at the bottom of a pond somewhere now, so I'd like to have something else non-slip like that.

I've never personally used horse mat but there was a thread or two about it recently (on Ed Caffrey's forum, I think) and everybody who tried it raved about it. Said it was a little ugly but a great grip and durable as all get out. If I remember correctly there were some types of mat that worked great but others that didn't. Might try the Search on that ....

Ive handled a few knives Jim Crowell made that had them. It was all the rave with the ABS Cutting crowd last year or so. Seemed to be the cats whiskers for a hard use knife, egronomic (sp?) and no slip to boot.

God Bless
Mike

What about the commercial grade spray on truck liner? I know a guy that does this professionally and they always do a test batch. He said I could make a mold, he would fill it and then I would just cut out the slabs and drill it. Do you think that would work?

I have made one knife with rubber floor mat used in a fitness room here at work. No I didnt cut the piece off the floor I used leftovers.
I used the wrong kind of adhesive and it didnt hold very good. I hear now that gorilla glue is good for this?
Everyone who seen the knife thought it was ugly with the rubber handles. I will say it was very "grippy" even when wet.

I ended up not using the rubber when I reglued handles back on the knife.

I have used neoprene a few times. Feels great. One customer has been using one for over 4 years and loves it.

Here is a pic of the last one I made.

The potential problem with rubber is how long it will last. Rubber deteriorates with age and exposure to air and UV light. Some motorcycle riders have to replace tires before the tread wears out because the rubber cracks with age. Rubber will crack, harden, shrink, warp, oxidize and discolor, and just fall apart over time.

Thought about that myself David. I think the rubber used in the mats is not as dense as tire rubber and is a little more forgiving to the elements. Possibly. It will however discolor from UV rays. So its kind of a toss up.

I was at an auction last night and they had 3 mats that sold for 50 cents. I wish I had seen this thread before! Oh well, I still came away with some goodies, including a couple new hammers. Finally got a flatter!
