anodizing

Hey guys,
I ain't posted for about a year, but been checking out the forum from time to time.

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has ever tried a car battery charger for an anodizing rig? Would it even work?

Just curious. Have some Ti I want to anodize on my first folder and didn't want to have to buy a variac. ( I'm kinda tight with the money!)

Thanks and God Bless!!!!

Hello Craig,
Yes, but ONE color only.
One voltage, one color.
The TSP bucket is(-), the part is (+)

I started out using a homemade etching machine. One color only (25 volts). But also understand you can use regular batteries and by hooking them in series you could get different voltages like 12, 24, 36, etc. Maybe somebody knows for sure if that will work. If so borrow all your neighbors car batteries and anodize away.

Variable DC voltage governs the color range.
The wider the range, the more colors possible.
A variable resistor hooked up in line may help give you more control.
PLEASE be careful stacking batteries together.
One spark can blow up a car battery, they give off HIGHLY EXPLOSIVE fumes.
Work safe. Have fun. Be Blessed.

Gene,

Your certainly right about the car batteries. I didn't think about the fumes and explosion possibility. You would probably want to do this outdoors. Question though what about dry cell batteries? Is there enough amps to anodize with the small dry cell batteries? I think volts regulate the color but amps determine how fast you get the color change.

And Craig, I bought my variac on ebay for $20.00 then used a bridge rectifyer from radio shack to go from AC to DC 3 or 4 dollars. If you go that route with a variac - Remember that DC current can hurt you too, especially with liquids and higher voltages that a variac puts out (up to 120 volts). Be careful there also.

Regards
