I would be happy to take on the challenge Alex! Thanks all for the nominations, as for the name I like "hot pot" also. If anyone else has some suggestions be sure to post them. Another suggestion would be "The Crucible" or "Liquid Metals".
Thread description idea: "The art and science of smelting and casting metals". Or "Melting crap.....on purpose." I have only been smelting for just over a year now and I still have alot to learn. There are alot of forum members that have been doing it for many years and with different techniques. It will be great to have an arena for all of us to chat and exchange idea's and experiences. Here is a ferro-nickel ingot I made a couple days ago for a guard. I cut up about a dozen nickels into small pieces and melted them with some scrap pure iron from some previous smelts. With an inert gas atmosphere there is no oxidation and you get a bright shiny ingot. Last edited by B.Finnigan; 04-23-2007 at 12:23 PM. |

I'm all for Brent as a mod.
I also like the names, and really like the idea of a smelting and casting forum. --Carl __________________ --Carl N-T Porkin' Pig Price ?? KN Auctions to help a member in need and score a GREAT deal! ?? |

Brent has mine also! So, I don't know if it's time for my first question or not, but assuming it is: Brent, give me a condensed version of exactly how to do this process, from beginning, to end (well, up to having a usable ingot to forge into a good blade). I wouldn't even know where to start to process one, or what materials to use, the heat involved, so I'm all eyes, type away!
