Repurposing vintage knives

Hello All,

I am a newbie to knifemaking and looking for advice.
I needed a low impact project during my retirement. I got involved in wood carving but lost interest. I decided to try making knives from straight razors and sold 30 or so, and then no interest from buyers for some reason.

Next idea repurposing vintage knives. I chose this model from chicago cutlery.

I sent them off for flat grinding and now have good blades in need of home. Of course I could remake steakknives but the tang design would need changing due to shape of the original knife.

Any ideas out there for repurposing ??
Cheers
Mike

Welcome to Knife Network!

All up to your creativity if repurposing them.

Lot of good knifemakers started out re-purposing old blades. Real trick is to learn to refine your work until you get the finishing steps up to snuff. Then......well, you'll find out you really want control over the whole process and start making your own blades from scratch. Then you will be totally addicted and become an incurable sick knucklehead like the rest of us with no hope for a real life.

Truth! Hahaha...

I picked these up yesterday from a barrel of abandoned and donated knives:

I could definitely see me cleaning up and rehandling the forks then making matching carvers to go with them.
I suspect a decent kitchen boning knife can be salvaged from the old carving knife - sure has seen the side of a steel a few times. Any stamping/logo/maker's mark on the blade?

Love those forks

Reworked several of those forks myself, made one from scratch:

No markings on the blade so no clue who and what vintage it may e. The color of the wood reminds me of that old 1904 Henckles pieces that passed through here some months back. I'll have to see what info is out there. A boning knife or utility slicer can be done. Can make a paring or fruit knife from the end piece.

I like the diversion of these since they are basically done pieces and giving them new life is a feel good project.

That's a BEAUTIFIL fork Ray!!! Great job!!

Where's the meat? Very nice Ray! Ever do one with the "kick stand" like a William Fink set (1849 gold rush era, maker from California)?
I did a miniature set 25 years ago (looking for a pic) with MOP handles and silver fittings and walnut box for my wife on our 25th anniversary.

Nope, no kickstand. I repaired one with a stand but never tried to make one from scratch . . .

Finally found pics of the carving set. That's a quarter for perspective (I didn't do a kick-stand on this fork either).

Thanks fellas. I made one other set like this for Mr. Lorenzo, Milan, Italy. He had purchased over 200 of my miniatures over the past years at the Blade Show. He always tried to get me to sell him this set (couldn't of course). I finally got around to making the second set just for him as a gift. Heck, he was one of my favorite customers. Any of you makers that ever dealt with him know how interesting an individual he truly was.
