Acid Etching Question

I have a question about acid etched finishes such as vinegar, mustard, lime juice, ferric chloride, etc. To what final grit should I hand rub the blade before applying the acid etch? And would it be the same preparation for bluing as well?

It really depends on what you are trying to achieve with the etch. I go to about 400 grit before I etch. I use a 50/50 mixture of ferric chloride and water and let soak in the mixture for 45 min.

This the the last one I etched.

That's exactly what I want. How did you do the art resist. Stickers? Free hand and nail polish?

The bear tracks are done free hand with a sharpie. The bear on the other side is done using a toner transfer method.

I like to use 1/3 ferric chloride, 1/3 white vinegar, 1/3 water. Soak five minutes, take out and clean thoroughly and soak five to ten minutes depending on the etch I'm trying to achieve.

Been doing it this way for years works like a champ for me.

I bring mine to a fair mirror polish on the buffing wheel before I etch.

A new sharpie is a great ground on a polished surface as you can refine the design with a toopick at the edges.
An example of that technique:
