Well, I got started on my entry. Thought it would be fun to shoot a youtube video of the forging process. Some of you guys wanting to forge cable might find it interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQFsHhfdlPs

I plan to start my KITH knife today. Hopefully I'll get the design and materials sorted out. My plan is to use either 440C or AEB-L, and a synthetic handle material like micarta or G10, and titanium pins. Heat treat will most likely be done by Peters, or another professional service.
Most often I start with 1/8", but I'm thinking .093 or .0875 this time. |

Epic fail! All I accomplished this weekend was to further confuse myself as to which design I'd like to try. My goal for this project is to up my skill level with 1 or 2 new techniques, but still present a knife worthy of no less than a B+, when graded on a professional standard.
The only solution I could come up with is to make one each of my three favorite designs, pick a favorite and make 3 more, all as practice pieces, upping the skill level and techniques each time. I'm an avid bird hunter, so I'll have no problem finding guys who will test them out for me. I'm open to suggestions and critique, if anyone disagrees with this method? Thanks |

Got my KITH knife done, well still needs a sheath. Can you guess what it's made from.

Kev your plans sound good. Most of my jumps in quality come from 2 things, making a couple slightly different to what ever I am trying to get better at, Lets say HT I will make a couple all HT slightly different, Same goes for handle design, blade design. But what I like to do is wich ever I think is the best I will give to some one to do there testing. MOst of the time its my uncle cause he BEATS his knives hard. I figure if it can survive a month with him it will survive a life time with a average user. Seems like you are doing both of the things I just listed so your going in the right direction. When you give them to someone to use and test give them to some one that will really try to kill them. remember even if it breaks or has a failure you still learned something!
Oh also why aim for a B+ why not aim for a A+ even if you wont reach that goal I always aim for the absolute best I can do on every aspect of the knife. and aiming high will ALWAYS keep you on your toes to do better the next time around |

Thank you for the comments.
Why a B+? Because I am pretty grounded, and I know where I'm at and how I judge my own work. I will never give myself an A, so I would never expect it from someone else. Also I've spent hours on websites looking at professional knives. To get a B+ at that standard is nothing to scoff at, at all. |

I started a small group of knives yesterday, one being the KITH knife. All 3 were out of 1095 and all three appeared to quench fine in my typical water quench (yes i know they're risky). I heard no pinging and they passed an initial file test (I'll hardness test after the temper). Then I noticed noticed something that made me cringe, my KITH knife warped in the quench. Hopefully I can straighten it out in the second temper but if not I might start fresh. Either way, by the 4th of July, I should have one ready to go easily.
