Leather Crafting - Pushing The Envelope

After a talk with Sandy a while back and then some recent posts about doing things other than sheaths, I decided to run this poll on how many or even if anybody would be interested in things leather other than just sheaths?
For instance I often make a matching belt to go with a sheath - so would belt making be of interest, and so on....................

This Poll will run for the next 7 days.

Hi Chuck! Good question. I would love to see anything crafted from leather here.

Ditto, but with the proviso that what the Lords of Leather can give they can also take away. Since CKD is dedicated primarily to custom cutlery I'd hate to see the emphasis stray too far. I'm sure there are techniques and designs from the rest of the leather world that will improve all of our skillls -- I'd like to see examples of leather crafting which are complimentary to better sheath making.

Well to say the least I'm surprised - but pleased - by the lopsided response

Yes this would be the main thrust - my thoughts were towards things such as pouches of various types (those nylon zippered pouches are convenient, but think about offering a carved, stamped, or snake skin inlayed one to the customer....), belts - imagine a belt inlayed to match this one by Bill Buxton -

holsters (recently there have been questions) and.......
anything leather skillwise though is transferrable to knives and it is the learning of those skills that I would like to emphasize most. My idea is to help everyone expand their knowledge, but especially aid those who are interested in making leather craft a business and one cannot make a live on sheaths alone!

Chuck,

I think that it might be cool to discuss/teach techniques that would be applicable to sheathmaking via demonstration in other objects. IE, tooling, lacing, dying techniques, beading, etc. apply to belts, sheaths, wallets, etc. I wouldn't mind seeing how to craft incidentals bags and other mountainman accoutrements and so on.

Chuck:

Thanks for conducting this poll! Although making leather sheaths is my preference, I find myself working on many other leather projects for friends and family (billfolds, cases, belts, and even dog leashes).

Sometimes I am cautious about asking a general leatherwork question (like my recent post about marking suede) because the question is related to putting together something other than a sheath. I definitely would welcome a "loosening" of the rules a bit, while still retaining the primary focus on sheathmaking.

Thanks for continuing to provide an outstanding online resource for leatherworkers. It is great for beginners like me to be able to pick the brains of the great artisans that hang out here.

Regards, -Alex

GREAT BIG affirmative!!!!

There is very little you can learn about leathercraft that can not be applied to sheath making. The more skills you acquire, the more your imagination can be stimulated to create innovative designs and construction. As Chuck says, one can make belts to match the art work in the sheaths and also holsters and other items such as rifle scabbards, possible bags, etc---- I will work closely with Chuck on this endeavour and TRY to give info to those who are interested. --Sandy--

I for one would like to hear about anything you thought you could do with leather.. I like the idea of working with leather but its rather intimidating especially since I just started forging knives and taken a bite of that... As for anything specific.. Belts and wallets and such are cool.. Oh yeah. Think you could make Bracers? Matching Sheath and Bracers would be neat. Especially since bracers are considered armor. Anyway thanx for all as always..
