round stock to flat stock
I have some one inch x 10 inch W-2 and would like to flatten it to 1/4 inch-anyone have an idea of the size of flat stock I would end up with? I have access to a power hammer, but wanted to have an idea before I used it. Thanks Dave |

I assume your talking about round stock of the size you mentioned, being forged into flat? If so, on 1" round stock I can get a piece of 1/4"X1"X34" out of one foot. So, I would expect you could get 28"-30" worth out of the piece you have. |

Dave, it depends on the dies used on the power hammer. Flat dies (or hammer faces) spread the stock in all directions, therefore you can't control the width. With drawing dies you can get a long bar that's not very wide or a wide bar that's not very long. Perpendicular to the dies will draw out very long. I use 3/4" round stock. If I hammer parallel with the stock, I can get a bar 1/4 x 1 1/4. Most of my hammers are "directional"(look like drawing dies) so I can control which way the steel will move. Hope I made sense, if not, I'll re-do it. |

Alan, I don't have the means to post pictures. Someday I'm going to send Ed a bunch of pics and have him post them.Centaur Forge catalogue has dies listed for sale, you can see what they look like in there.Yes they are easy to make. Since I've made most of my hammers, I grind the face with just my belt grinder. Store bought hammers can be ground to shape. Most Peddinghaus blacksmith hammers come with directional faces also.Hope this helps. |
