I'm not sure what you mean by 'alone'. A fair part od whether or not it might work depends on the overall design of the burner. Personally, on my Dirt Simple burner - which is pretty darned simple - I prefer a 2:1 ratio although I have no reason tho think that any other ratio would fail completely. USA Knife Makers has a simple venturi that actually has no venturi at all but appears to work just fine ...

Yes Ray, my new forge from them has no venturi, just a piece of pipe with the gas nozzle centered about 1/4" away from the end and it works fine. Though it does start to sputter about every 10 min and I have to adjust the regulator. It may be that my gas is almost gone too. But it get REAL hot! Past forge welding temps!
