OK it's time to announce the winner and that would be SteveM with his "1953" guess. The knife was made in 1943 (see the Stiletto on Week 2). This is just another example of the spacers being only a small part of the dating equasion. You have to look at the "whole package": Blade grind, hilt, spacers, handle sheath, stone. Thanks to everyone who participated and Steve: Please PM me your shipping info and I'll get the Norton catalog out to you.

Best,

Ron

WOW, I never thought I had a chance on this. I'll have to say it was all luck and absolutely zero knowledge because it was a wild guess. Thanks for your generosity in this contest.

Steve,

It was a crap shoot at best. I had no idea myself that the "3 thick / 2 thin" set went back that far until I got my hands on that Stiletto. Congratulations! I'll get the catalog in the mail to you post haste.

Best,

Ron

Congratulations, Steve!

You're the winner, and you were only ten years off.

Thanks again Ron for this interesting guessing game. I told you folks there might be a trick in his question.

Cheers!

Moosehead

I got lucky. Only 10 years off, don't sound like a lot, but think if you were buying or selling it. I think the difference between a 53 and a 43 would be quite a bit. So it goes back to what BoBlade said, judge the whole package, not just one thing. This was a great lesson. It tells me I need to study more.

Feel like the blind led to the slaughterhouse, Ron's slaughterhouse that is!... should have guessed a 40's knife, as I knew Ron has been concentrating on one!

But then again it's not like I had an inkling that the pattern dated back to the 40's...

Good one Ron! learned something again! 8o

Wapper,

I'm sure my hair-brain will be able to come up with another contest in the near future so all is not lost. Just go with your instincts next time

Best,

Ron
