Traditional Canadian Knife??

Ok, I need some help. I want to make a tribute knife for a friend who was from Newfoundland. I'd like to make a traditional Canadian of Newfy knife, but I'm not quite sure what that means. The only "Canadian" knife I can think of is a Canadian belt knife. Does anyone else have any ideas?

The only one I can think that could be considered traditional would be the Hudson Bay large camp style knife. I seem to recall that it was designed and made at the request of some of the people that HB Trading Co. hired to trap for them.

The Grohmann design that you referred to has only been around since the 1950's. The HB goes back much farther.

How about an Ulu. Very traditional. Certainly been around long enough to qualify. Very handy once you get used to it. I think about as traditional as yo are going to find.

Have you tried a general web search to see if you can find knives from Newfoundland? Might be worth a shot. I have no idea what a traditional Canadian knife might be but my gut says they are probably much like our own traditional knives.

Add a puuko to your list for consideration. More Lapland than Newfoundland but maybe your friend is as geographically challenged as I am ....
