Laid Off - Now I'm working 7 days a week...

...in the shop, and loving every minute. Seems when the good lord gives you a smack up side the head, it's to see how you handle it.

Now (instead of commuting 35 miles to work) I'm in the shop by 7:30AM each day until my back starts to give out (spine surgery 4 years ago as a result of rodeoing in my young & dumb years when I was 10 feet tall and bulletproof - anyone else remember those days?). When the heating pad starts calling, I move to the computer where I decided to totally rebuild my web site from the ground up. The new version should go live in about two weeks. Wow - come to think about it, I'm busier now than I was with a full time job, and I get along much better with my new boss.

Okay, nuff 'jabberin' - Below are some of my recent pieces, a few of which are still available. Have a great Sunday guys and remember to thank the man above for listening. I'm living proof that he listens even when you wonder if he is.

Luckily this piece sold within an hour of notifiying a customer who I thought might like it.

Very beautiful work Wayne. Your new "boss" agrees with everything that you say and some things that you don't. My "boss" is the same way. I have been hired and fired at least 5 to 10 times a week, got the best job in town. Does the Leigh Johnson Damascus comes in bars for us stock removal guys? It is beautiful stuff.

Thanks Gil. Yeah, my new boss is one of those tempermental types too but he's better than what I had before.

Regarding Leigh Johnson's Damascus....I'm a stock removal guy too, and Yes, he sells billets on his new web site at http://www.johnsoncustomsteel.com/
He's new to the scene and a young fella', but his steel is great - he's talented beyond his years. Good patterns, good layer count, nice and flat and he anneals them like butter. He is a great guy all around. Give him a try and tell him who you heard it from...I'm trying to help him out as much as I can. Take care.

I am going to try some of the steel and I also need to know how you heat treat it? I do my own heat treatment and would need the formula from you if you have it.

I spoke too soon before I read his website and it says he sends heat treatment info with the billet. He has got good prices too. Form what I see in the photos above it makes some great looking knives, now if I can do as well as you.

Nice!

Thanks for all the inspiration, and some great eye candy. File work is looking good, and the finish is quite "tight"

Tell the BOSS you need a vacation every Quarter... You build it into your plan now, and it will keep you working inspired!

God Bless...

I got me a tattoo of a bull rider on my back covering a scar that I got riding a bull. Why did we ever think that was a good idea?
Great looking knifes. I hope all goes well for you. And remember if more than one of the critters feet come off the ground at a time man is not made to get on top of it.

Will - I rode bareback and broncs but never anything that would actually chase me once I hit the ground. On top of getting run over, too many of my bull riding buddies had false teeth in their twenties and thirties from the bulls head snapping back to meet their face. My time was before all the safety equipment like vests but I do remember seeing Charlie Sampson wearing his LaCrosse helmet after his face was crushed at the Presidential Rodeo in '81.

I'd think about getting a tat to cover the spine surgery scar but my luck it would just look like a vertical "tramp stamp" which would be wrong on so many levels.

Pierre - Thanks for the good words. Vacation? Sounds like a good idea. Heck, all I want to do is get in some fly fishing during the week now that I don't have to fight the crowds on the weekends. No more "combat" fising for me.

Chris - any way you get it, back injuries are bad news. Sorry to hear about your accident and your wife and her three surgeries. I don't know how she let them in there three times! I'm fused on L4,L5 & S1 with 6 screws, 2 rods and a cage and once was enough. The bone pain is gone but the Doc "zipped" the muscles up too tight so now I deal with spasms all the time but it's better than not walking.
I'm with you on the sales comment too. Hot and cold. Went like crazy the beginning of the month and then it quieted way down. One thing for sure is that there are people out there with expendable income who may not have confidence enough to buy a new car but they will continue to support their hobbies like knife collecting.

Take care everyone. God Bless.
