newbie question
Do you heat-treat a blade for a folder any different then you would for a fixed bladed knife. If so, what are your recommendations? Thanks in advance. Mike K |

Mike, You are heat treating the steel for it's properties and not for it's style. If you are treating it yourself in a forge you will have to be careful because of the size of the blade. It will get to critical a lot faster than a big blade and it may warp easier. You will also want to be careful to hold the blade on the spine and not on the tang, the tang needs to be fully heat treated so it can withstand the abuse it gets when the knife is opened and closed as well as the stresses of use. Some of the folders guys will most likely jump in soon with more info. |

Mike, if you are using the same steel, you heat treat it the same unless you are looking for different properties in the two different blades. For example, you might want the temper on a large fixed blade knife to give you a finished hardness of 58, while you'd be happy with 60 on a folder blade. The other issue is the order of events. Many folder makers do their heat treating after profiling the blade and before grinding it, the idea being to prevent warpage. |

Mike, I heat treat folder blades the same as I do straight knives. Profile, grind down to near thickness I am looking for then heatreat. Never had a problem with warpage as long as the grind is even before heat treat. |
