The Green Smiley
What on earth is this ---> 0] ???
How might this smiley come up during the course of normal CKD conversation? (Is there such a thing as "normal CKD conversation?") Just curious... -D |

Beats me. I have no idea where that one might come in handy. Not too sure where to use the 8o nerd one either.
While looking at these things, I only just realized that there is a link in the Smilies box to more Smilies. The (LOL) one is in there. I thought we'd lost that one. I use it frequently. |

I accidentally found the smilie as well. I thought maybe Alex had added it because you asked Terry!
Maybe we can use 8o when Alex and Martyn start communicating in machine code .... As for 0] I think it belongs on a watch face for night-time viewing Roger |

Alien
Quite clearly it is an Alien, as in, '...the concept of normalcy is 0] to me.'

Jon - here's an interesting aside: the word "normalcy" was itself alien ( 0] ) to the English language until 1920. The correct usage would be "normality." Technically, "normalcy" is not even a word.
So why do people use it? In 1920, while campaigning for the presidency, Senator Warren G. Harding used it in a speech, promising the American people "not heroics but healing; not nostrums but normalcy; not revolution but restoration." He won by a landslide, and to this day people use the bastardized word he errantly coined in that fateful campaign speech over 80 years ago. The irony of it is that prior to his political career, Harding was publisher and editor of an Ohio newspaper, the Marion Star. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed today's trivia. Now, back to the topic of smileys, here's one I created a year or two ago using a GIF animator program. It may come in handy when I bore you with my trivia ad nauseum. __________________ new and improved signature coming soon |

Trivia's cool. You did a good job on the animation.
One of my pet peeves, though not a bastardization, is the mispronunciation of the word nuclear. When someone pronounces it "nuke-yuh-ler", I just want to slap them. I believe the first well known figure to pronounce it this way was former president, Lyndon Johnson. |

Nuke-ya-ler drives me nuts too...
I've heard the Chiefs of Staff say it, I've heard Presidents say it, and honestly, the guys with their fingers on the Button oughta at least pronounce it right! ...But if there's precedent for Presidents then we've got some new and recent additions to the English language! Which is one of the cool things about English... it keeps on moving... one of my 'History of English,' books somewhere explains the dynamics of how people get lazy with words and it becomes a driving force in the evolution of language... simplifying complex syllables and awkward consonants etc... Maybe the 'Noo-kya-lur,' crowd is simply ahead of the game... 0] PS the Barfy Smiley face rocks!!!!!!!!!! |

Mr. Barf Smiley looks like he's losing his cream of tomato soup. Ughh... Nice touch, Derek. And how many semesters did you spend learning this applicable skill??
My favorite word peave? 'Irregardless'! Nope, no such thing. There's 'irrespective', and 'regardless', but no irregardless. Regardless is all you need. This one rolls off the tongues of enough folks that it might just BECOME a word--like Jon said. Coop |

Terry, you ever notice that the ones that mispronounce nuclear the most, are those in charge of the stuff. Military bigwigs and DOD people. Scary.

Glad you guys like the barfing smiley. Alex - I'm not sure if I can size that thing down. After all, I meticulously drew in each little green, yellow and red chunk one bit at a time. If I were to figure out how to make it small, much of the detail would be lost and it would look weird.
Irregardless ( ) of what I may think, however, you're more than welcome to try. Oh - and one last pet peeve: people using "is" twice consecutively, as in "the problem is is that..." Drives me nuts. __________________ new and improved signature coming soon |
