making acid etch on cable more scratch resistant

Is there a way to make etch more scratch risistent on cable Damascus? The guy I am making it for plans on using it but I feel he will be disappointed with the wear factor. My dad use to use boiled lindseed oil when he browned muzzle loaders. would leave a dark rich chocolate finish to barrel.

Some people boil the knife after they have etched them. Supposed to set the dark on an etched blade.

Here's what I do. For a full quench blade I give it a couple of long etches in ferric chloride. Between etches ( and before) I want to bring it down to at least a 600gr by hand sanding. The long etch along with full quench will create an inverted spiderweb effect. If the blade is not hardened properly the weld zones will polish brighter than the steel.
Of course the finer the polish the more the scratches will show.
