knife blank trued and flat

wondering how you guys get a knife blank trued and flattened, without metal planer. been making blades on and off for 4-5 years now. sometimes handle scales look perfect when fitted, more than I like got a small gap somewhere, usually where the end of the scale meets the blade. I don't have high=dollar equipment, am a hobbyist, but do want to get better as I go. just wondering, how do you achieve a consistent true handle to blade fitment without going high on the equipment hog ?

If you're using a belt sander, it's easy to gouge spots in the blade. If you use a file or a block for hand sanding, it will usually keep it level. I find more of a problem with the scales, where the grinder will sort of round off the edges, giving them a gap that has to be fixed.

Nearly all my fixed blade knives were made with a stub tang so I avoided your problem altogether. Done correctly, a stub tang knife is as strong as you'd ever need a knife to be, there are no scales to warp, beautiful handle materials are displayed more effectively. When you finish the handle you only have to deal with one material instead of steel + handle material. Short blade knives like hunters balance better without all the weight being in the handle. For me, stub tangs just made more sense . . .

yeah, I use a belt grinder. have more trouble rounding edges of the blades than the handle blanks. will spend more time than i like on them, check them with straight edge, see the dreaded light streak showing between blade and straight edge. my main frustration
