I seem to recall that this question has been asked before, try the Search key. I don't think there was a lot of info avaliable but there was some. You might lSearch for Chris Crawford's post or Search on his name. Someone has a video available on scale release autos and I think it may be him...

Sam,

Knifekits.com has a book you could use, and a kit or two that could go along way to helping you figure it all out. Look here: http://www.knifekits.com/

Otherwise, don't let the blue search-button crowd beat you down. You're welcome here, and so are all your questions.

This is an open forum for knife discussion and not an electronic library. I don't know where these people learned to treat people this way, but I know they didn't get that kind of treatment when they first started to learn.

The Newsletter

I learned most of what I know about autos from this newsletter. Kind of pricy, but very imformative for a subject that has such a taboo associated with it.

I have done the search for automatics and switchblades looking for diagrams of the internal designs and found several different posts that others had taken the time to do computer renderings of.This was awhile ago so i dont recall how i worded the search perameters but the posts will still exist so you could give it a try.

here are some links that might help

http://www.talkblade.info/index.php
might have some helpfull info the site seems more auto oriented
here is another its just harder to navigate http://forums.delphiforums.com/Knife101/start
here are some auto kits http://www.mikovknives.com/index.html
http://www.knifekits.com/ has parts and kits and the book as Sam said befor

its hard to find plans for autos for some reson. mabey becaus thay(the plans) are worth money mabey its becaus thay(the knives) are not legal in alot of places. what ever the case i had the same problem some time ago and just gave up becaus even if do make an auto i can not legaly carry it in brooklyn ny or any other place in ny state. so thay are realy of no use to me unless im looking to go to jail. and i belive just the act of making a switch blade/gravity/auto type knife over the length of 2 in is a felony in NY. im not exactly sure on these laws so dont quote me on them
