New "How I do it" Videos page on my website!
Just finished uploading a new page on my website....dedicated to short videos of "How I do it". Right now the videos include: Finishing handles on the grinder, applying Tru-Oil, and Hand Finishing Blades. As time permits, I will add more. If you have requests for specific videos, let me know, and I will put them on the "to do" list.
Heres a link to the Video page: http://www.caffreyknives.net/how_to_videos.html __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

How bout a short video documenting every step of a folder...start to finish... You know, like a "dummy's guide to making a fantastic folder with bearings"....

Excellent work sir !!
My request would be for making and peening bolsters. (Stainless especially) My second one would be for making your perfect match-up between softer handle material to spacers then to bolsters. (I think there might be a theme here) Thank you for your time with these videos !!! Troy |

Jeremy..... I can do that without a video!
Step 1: Draw it Step 2: Build it DONE! See, wasn't that easy?!? I know, I know.......but I just couldn't resist! __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

Ed,
What I was referring to is the joining of the scale, spacer, then bolster in-line on a full tang. (spacer between scale and bolster). All three being different materials to get them perfectly sanded down without digging into the other or ruining the finish on one of them. I hope this clarifies. example: (I know it's not full tang but assuming on same principles) [IMG][/IMG] Troy Last edited by PoolQs; 01-10-2015 at 10:46 AM. Reason: add pix |

Great tutorials Ed. I have one question about the handle tutorial, why do you start with the scales so thick? It looks like you removed half of the thickness between part 1 to part 4

The handle material I used on the video knives was cut from chunks of ironwood.....I knew there wouldn't be enough for other handles.....so in this case I erred on the side of leaving them overly thick... one one particular, there was a big knot in the ironwood that I wanted to keep......and the best way to do that was leave the material overly thick....then grind down to the knot. None of the material was more then 3/8" thick....but because the knives are small, it makes the handles look terribly thick.

I've not tried anything like that in a LONG time. There reason being is that its such a tedious job to build it, that I can never get my time/effort back out of it. About sanding/finishing something like that, I would do it on a slack belt....its not difficult to get things to come down evenly......its just VERY time consuming. You just have to go SLOW. Ideally what I do is grind as close as I dare with a "Y" or "X" weight belt in 50 grit, then just leave enough to clean up with the finer grits. Its the "J" weight belts that cause the uneveness, because of their extreme flexibility. You still have to use them, but minizing their use to just "clean up" helps prevent the uneven grinding thing. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |
