heat treating forum
How about a forum dedicated for heat treated steels. Have a brief description on how to heat treat the different cutlery steels. Then everyone can give their opions on what worked for them and what didn't.

I actually think that is a good idea. Anyone else?

A HT specific forum would bear excellent traffic and have huge interest, I feel. Heat treat puts the magic in a blade and should be well understood by anyone who makes knives, whether they do their own or send it out.
It might even be extended to discuss a bit of metallurgy to help us all along with the various blade steels. Great idea..... |

We should think this one out in terms of how it is organized, because, by nature it will be very material-specific.
Is it possible to have a separate thread for each common blade material, perhaps with a 'sticky' at the top with the basic HT formula, followed by questions and discussions for that material? Maybe another thread/resource/sticky with links to Hitachi, Damasteel, Crucible, etc., for their HT spec sheets? Just a few thoughts. |

I vote yes as well, and echo Don's comments.

A drop down for each steel or something like what they have in the sheath making forum that show the galleries, for each steel.

I also like the idea and have a suggestion for the basic forum structure.
Maybe four small forums inside the overall "Heat Treating Forum" and they could be: Heat Treating Forum .....Basics of Heat treating in plain language for the new knifemaker. ..........This forum would discuss the basics and the how and whys of Heat treating. ..........Including a description similar to the one I did but maybe written by a more polished writer. .....Heat treating carbon steels ..........This forum could have threads of each type of steel and members could post their method for "X" steel. .....Heat treating stainless steels ..........This forum could have threads of each type of steel and members could post their method for "X" steel. .....Advanced heat treating ..........This forum could be for Salt, Cryo and other advanced heat treating. |

Great idea bob, I would also like to see a topic on the different useful tools used, ie.. quench tanks, tongs, designs for different salt tanks, etc..

I love the idea. If it doesn't add to much to the forum already, how about a troubleshooting area. It could address things like warpage, inclusions, etc. with pictures encouraged?

I'm up for Bobs Idea, like his suggested layout too.
Chris...I would think you could address you problems under your specific material, ie I warped a carbon steel blade without and advanced techniques so I would search, then post under Carbon Steel.
