Carbon v
Hey guys. I have a carbon v (cold steel) blank. I was wondering how the experts would heat treat it. Like 1095? Normalize? Nothing crazy just curious if the temps are the same as 1095?
Thanks Clay |

Hard to say for sure since I think they keep the alloy mix in that stuff a 'secret'. Where did you get a blank? If CS sells them now they should be able to provide HT info. If not, go for non-mag and quench in a pro oil - can't go too far wrong with that basic formula...

Unless you can get CS recommendations, I'd go with what Ray described. Just do a smaller test blade first - better to find out you messed up on a smaller piece of less work.

Just a thought, if it's a finished blank - profiled, ground and everything - it's probably already heat treated.

I was going to say....a blank from Cold Steel and you wanted to heat treat it? Unless you have connections with Lynn Thompson and the guys there....I doubt you have an unhardened blank. But, for what it's worth.....Carbon V is 0170-6C. Verified by Cold Steel themselves. It is just like most all other high carbon alloy steels in heat treating. If I had an unhardened blank and wanted to heat treat it....after normalizing and thermal cycling for grain reduction.....1475F for 10 minute soak....into a fast or medium speed oil. Temper twice @ 400F for two hours each.
