Is This a Randall Model 3-7?

My father has this knife and wants me to sell it for him but he is not sure what model it is. I have looked online and it looks like a Randall model 3-7. He brought it to a place a few years ago and they said that it was worth $800.00. Does anyone know what the value of it is today? My father engraved his initials on the end, does that hurt the value? It has a Randall sheeve. Any info would be helpful. The blade measures just under
4.75" and the knife is 9 3/8" overall in length. There are a few pits on the blade.

Hi Paul, welcome to the Knife Network and thanks for your questions about your Dad's Knife.

I moved you thread over here to the main Randall forum.

I can definitely tell you that the knife is NOT a model #3-7, but IS rather a model #7 "Fisherman- Hunter". Your photo of the back of the Johnson rough-back sheath, stamped 7-4 1/2 confirms this. It looks to me like it was made in the early 70's, but others may correct me.

As to the value in today's market, I hesitate to guess. However, the pitting on the blade and your Dad's initials "scratched" on the butt cap would be negative factors. If his name had been etched on the blade by the Randall shop it would normally not hurt the value.

The knife is certainly a credible example of RMK history. Perhaps you may want to keep it.

I hope this helps.

Cheers

David

Good lord, don't let him sell it, it's a family heirloom!

BTW, I'm up for adoption.

He said he would like to get $600.00 for it. Is that a viable price for it?

Does that mean that is a model 7-4? What does the 1/2 mean?

Paul, it's too bad your Dad must sell the knife to pay bills, but I do understand.

The 1/2 stands for half an inch. So the 7-4 1/2 means the sheath is for a model #7 with a four and a half inch blade.

Given the condition of the knife I believe $600 would be a reasonable price (just my personal opinion). Others are welcome to chime in.

Cheers

David

Sounds reasonable to me as well, but I admit no expertise.

I understand selling it too, and hope he gets top dollar for it. Randalls are worth it.
