First Knife
Here is a couple of pics of my first knife. I used the kit from Midwest Knifemakers Supply and changed the handle material to Rosewood. I used a template from Dan Comeau @ DCKNIVES.com
I had some issues with the grind line and got lucky when I heat treated it because I was too thin on the edge. It didn't warp I'm going to take the handle material from the kit and I have some 1080+ from AlphaKnifeSupply and make a kitchen knife for my wife. I need to build up some good will for all the tools I bought for this one. Thanks to Ray Rogers, Tony Z and the others for their input a couple of weeks ago during the Sunday Chat session. They convinced me to re-profile it instead of doing a break test on it when I burnt the end with my new grinder. I'll do a break test on the next one. Thanks again Mark mwhuston Last edited by mwhuston; 12-01-2014 at 06:39 AM. |

Very well done Mark! Always feels good when you make your first knife. I really like how it turned out! Now just get her good and sharp and test her out hard!
Enjoy the next build with that 1080. I use a set of French curves and draw and design my own, basically a modified version of an existing knife! Maybe consider trying the next KITH of Ray's. That would be good. Take care. Tony Z Kansas City, MO __________________ ABS Apprentice Bladesmith USMC Veteran VFW Life Member "Retreat? Hell, we just got here!" Good work Mark! You are well on your way. If you are looking to make a sheath for it and complete the package, there are a few good tutorials around.

Not bad at all. Did you mean to do a convex grind, or did your first attempt at a flat grind just turn out that way? Completely understandable if it did. I'm just curious.

dbsmith111: I was trying to do a flat grind, and was pretty successful until after I heat treated it and tried to clean it up on my new grinder. I messed up the grind at that time. I used a file to do the bevel originally.

Congrats! It looks great. Good job sticking with it even if you made an "unplanned design modification"... look forward to seeing you next ones.
