Spot Welders

Hi,
Hope you all can help me with this. I'm wanting to build some slip joint folders. I think I want to spot weld the bolsters. So, my questions.....

1. In general, Do I need a 220 volt unit or will a 110 volt unit suffice? I'm thinking .040 ss liners and perhaps up to .125 bolsters.
2. Any brand/make preferred over another?

Did I miss anything? Any other info I need to know?

Thanks
Steve Hostetler

Spot welder

Just my two cents worth. I had a 110 Mac Tools spot welder that I welded bolsters on with same size that you are working with. It did an ok job. I think a 220 unit would work better. The 110 unit would take a little bit of time to get hot enuf, but it did work well. You have to watch out for hardening the bolster in spots. Make sure you dont spot weld where you want to drill a hole. After words you have to heat the entire bolster red hot and allow to cool , so you dont have hard spots that show up when you polish the bolsters. the hard spots seem to shine a little brighter, looks odd.

I sold my welder on ebay a few years ago and started soldering them on and like that much better. It just depends on what you are used to. I got Mr. Davison to show me how to solder on bolsters and with a little practice it works well. Hope this helps.

I have a cheap 110V spot welder. I've been using it for years to spot weld my bolsters.

As Joe says, you must heat to red hot to hide the spots.
