Who is Von Dutch?

Just saw a knife by someone called Von Dutch on ebay. Starting bid is 10K! Who was this guy to demand that kind of price?

No idea. What's the link? I would like to see what a 10k knife from an unknown maker looks like.

He's not unknown...

...just to you.

Pretty illustrious career, although knives were only one of the things he is reknowned for. More like an asterisk. He was a famous hotrodder bike and car customizer. Passed away in 1992.

That knife is pretty cool, but I would be hard-pressed to see it move at that price.

Ebay listing

Good.

Maybe more folks will start to think of knives as objets d'art, and we can stop charging $5 an hour.

You get 5 bucks an hour ? Man I envy you. Maybe someday I will be able to demand those prices.

Seriously. I think more of us need to really look at our overheads... have a SCORE volunteer go over it with you.

We're all guilty of undercharging for our work.

I think Von Dutch, like Big Daddy Roth "borrowed" a lot from Kelly-Mouse Studios. Or at least commisioned art from them.

I have an original T-shirt of the flying eyeball by Kelly-Mouse. I must have tattooed it 20 times in the last 20 years along with countless variations.

It's all coming together now. I was flipping through a tat mag yesterday and saw a huge 'VonDutch' back piece.

Plus, (this is embarassing) I've done a variation of that eyeball in the past year on an old tattooer myself. I guess I was just uninitiated until now.

Just when you think you know everything... kidding, of course.

Yeah, this guy is a major design icon. No doubt a fan of his other work will swoop in ... maybe?

I knew Von Dutch as a pinstriper of custome cars and bikes. In my highschool days I did custom car painting and pinstriping and hand lettering in gold leaf. Cool guy. I had no idea he made any knives.
