Buying Heat Treating oven need some input

Hi All,

Thinking of getting an oven. These are the three I am looking at.

This one http://usaknifemaker.com/kinfedogs-oven.html

Vs this one http://usaknifemaker.com/heat-treat-...trol-240v.html

vs this one http://usaknifemaker.com/heat-treat-...tal-12key.html

Price is not to much of an issue between them. Seems the top one can do what I need it to do. Nice to have the oven do everything by itself. Seems like an alarm clock and a binder with times and temps will work as well.

Chime in please Do I really need a oven that I can connect to my computer. I'm Just saying.

Thanks, Ken

As someone who has owned just about every brand of heat treat oven (besides a Sugar Creek), I would strongly recommend a Paragon. They are just plain built better then all the rest, and I also advise that you get a programmable model..... I say that because the evenheat I had WAS NOT programmable.....and you will waste a lot of time watching the oven, and you'll wreck blades because you'll get bored waiting on it, go to do something else, and forget.

I know the Paragons are more expensive, but as I learned the hard way after spending the money multiple times, it's worth it.

I agree with Ed. My Paragon is about 20 years old and has been a faithful companion. Can't beat a programmable controller.

Unlike Ed, I have had very good luck with my Evenheat. The model I have has a programmable controller that you can program up to 5 different programs and is 220 volt. It is 18 inches deep and gives me plenty of room for my biggest hunting knife. I have been using it for about 5-6 years with no problems incountered during that time span.
But I am a part time knife maker and Ed may have used his ovens far more then I have mine. I have done over 200 knive blades in mine, the majority being S30V steel that I take up to 1950 degrees for the hardening process with two temper cycles lasting 2 hours each. I only do two blades at a time in the oven.

Hard decision I get feed back both ways. This much I have decided:
1. 220v
2. Programmable
3. 18 inch min.
I think its going to come down to price. Any one know who has the best prices on Evenheat and paragon?

I bought the 24 inch paragon programmable from USAKnifemaker and am very pleased. I would recommend the 24", having a chamber that is too long is far better than having one that is too short.

I researched this a few months ago. It seems Paragon and Evenheat are Ford and Chevy. I'll purchase the 24'' Paragon in Sept. but I did like the Evenheat KO 22'' its about the same price.

You will find that the Paragon is built a lot stronger. I have had an Evenheat for years and have regretted the choise. If I had it to do over I would have gone with the Paragon. As well as being more durable, the Paragon door opens upward rather than sideways which is much nicer. Plus 1 on 220v & programmable controls.
