Working Titanium

What is the best way to cut titanium? Also what speed do you drill it at? I have some in the shop that I want to start using and I've never fooled with the stuff before. Thanks.

I do not have much experience... Carbide drills are best...slow speed and plenty fluid. I used my drillpress along with a slittingsaw with slow speed and feed to cut the lock in the folder I work on...works good.

Slow speed on the grinder is good as it trows less sparks...it is pretty tough to grind on the platten cause it creates a GIANT bur!

I am not a maker, but have started making bracelets and (soon) rings out of Ti. Here is what I have found and learned...

#1 if you are grinding and it smokes lower your speed. The smoke (and dust) contains vanadium in it and will give you vanadium poisoning (nose bleeds, sore throat, etc.)

#2. This stuff gets HOT! and when it does it gets work hardened. Very quick, too....ouch....

#3 If it gets red hot and cools down slowly more than twice it is very brittle while bending (major bending that is)

#4 Plain ole hacksaw blade cuts it very easily. (In my opinion)

#5 Finishes up great! Nice shine!!! 100 belt, 200 yellow micron belt, 600 hand sanding , on too 1200 hand sanding. Buff with Rouge on buffer (I used red, but am gonna try others...I KNOW I can make it shiner)

I am sure there is lots more I missed, so I am gonna check back to see what some of the makers say....
I just got a large order in from Chuck.

Working ti is slow.
Do not get it HOT.
The thicker it is, the slower it is.
I use Bi-Metal bandsaw blades to cut and cobalt drills to drill.
Keep working pressure on it at all times. If you dwell the feed, it can dull your bit,That quick.
It is a very gummy metal and wants to push rather than cut.
Take your time and keep it cool.
