a good begining book?

I know nothing. lots of carpentry experience but almost no metal working experience. what books are good for the beginer. I would love one that explains how to make a knife from stock steel, not forging and explains terms, steel selection, etc. thanks

"How to Make Knives," by Richard Barney and Bob Loveless,
is a great starting point. Covers stock removal by hand tools alone, with a fully equipped machine shop, and by forging.

You can find folders in Bob Terzuola's book (don't have the title handy- anyone else want to chime in with it?), and any questions you have along the way can probably answere here. Be sure to register so we know who you are- it's free.

And welcome to the CKD!
