Last one for the year......
Its just fitted together at this time but might as well go ahead and post it. This is another saw steel blade and I'm thinking now I had some more shear steel that I didn't know I had. Wrought iron fittings and blackwood handle. 4" blade and 8" overall.

Another beauty. A timeless look. I am also getting really nice results with a deep etch that shows up the very active grain in the unhardened area. Jason.

Jason, What steel are you getting these results with? Also what are you using for an etchent?

GDay Ray, I got that result when I was forging blades in 1095 for my Japanese style knives. Provided the HT technique worked out, a deep etch with ferric chloride and further hand-finishing would bring out the pattern - like woodgrain. But it depends on the grain pattern that is already there in the forging bar stock. I did the same with blades forged from old files and the pattern is different. To me the important thing is that not only it looks good, the etch shows that your HT worked ! The same etch obviously shows that the hardened area has a very fine grain - just the way it should be. Heres a pic from my archives -
http://www.fototime.com/ftweb/bin/ft...7988.845274537 I've got to try to make one of these knives sometime. Its a pattern I quite like. Cheers. Jason. __________________ JASON CUTTER BLADEART Jason Cutter @ Dr Kwong Yeang Knifemaker, Australia (Matthew 10.16) |

Thanks for getting back to me and the picture. The old saw steel has definatly got my interest in a number of ways. Got some old Nash Metro leaf springs that are catching my attention. Know there not 5160 or even 9260, I may just pay a few bucks and have them tested and find out what they really are.....
