New to knife making
Hey everyone I am new to knife making and had a couple of questions. I decided I wanted to make a knife for when I bbq but not going to invest in making my own blades because I'm more of a woodworker and my wife would kill me lol. I ordered a blade and decided since I live in TX I wanted to use mesquite for the handle but the handle length is 3/4 of inch longer than the scale I ordered what would be the best way to deal with this? Second question is it says to seal the mesquite what would be the best sealer to use? All help is much appreciated and I thank everyone in advance.

What kind of handle is it? Full tang, stub tang, etc. if it's full tang you could drill an extra hole or two on the end near the blade and use a metal or wood bolster.

Its a full tang 5 3/4" the last hole by the blade would be exposed it has alot of spacing between holes

Post pics when you get able to. Always helps.
If the scales are long enough to suit your hand and facilitate proper safe use, I'd think more about cutting off the excess tang. If not you're going to have to add either bolsters or some more complimentary wood/material to the scales. I think you will find that a heattreated blade blank is going to be very difficult to drill extra holes especially near the blade. Without seeing the blank, it sounds like the "front" hole maybe for pinning on bolsters. If you'd like, you can take pics and email them to me. Be sure to put a ruler next to the blade for reference. Send me your email address via pm and I'll send you my email address. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H Last edited by Crex; 03-30-2016 at 05:45 AM. |
