Cool Question: home made metal bandsaw

I like the idea of building the "vertical band saw",, from a hand held saw fastened on a stand. I just need to know if "other" blades are available,, or at least what length blade they take, then I can check myself. It would be great to use this saw for metal and wood, just by changing blades. A thin wood cutting blade that could cut shapes and circles, inlays ect.. wow the possibility's!!! --Jon

Most of the portable bandsaws use a 44 7/8" blade. I keep both 14 and 18 tooth blades in the shop. All of my wood blades are custom made locally. I've never seen a commercially available wood blade that will fit these saws. To be honest, most of the time I'm too lazy to change the blades for wood, and use whatever is on the saw.

If you don't need a full sized bandsaw for wood I'd look at a small table top unit. I was just looking on Craigslist, and there is a couple of used ones for around $30. Changing blades back and forth is a PIA. Plus the blade speed is up there where it should be for cutting wood.

I love my dewalt poratband. I mounted it on the wall right next to my wood band saw. You will not like trying to cut wood on the portaband. It runs way too slow. Get a wood saw for the wood. You should be able to get any local saw shop to make the blades for you. I get mine here locally in Montana. If I can get something here, it can be gotten anywhere!! The dewalt is really simple to mount. Just take off the upper handle and attach a couple pieces of 2" angle iron to the wall. You can use the same holes in the saw with the screws out of the handle to attach it to the angle iron.

Good luck,

Steve
