Trees? foliage? anything growing?
With that many troops moving around, no wonder nothing grew! 225,000 men in one picture? That is nearly a quarter of a million souls. Can you imagine the logistics in getting them in position for the photographer? I wonder if they had to build a tower in that flat land in order to elevate the photographer to enable that picture to be recorded? Seems to me that it was poor use of troops during wartime.
