micarta question
I have two questions..
first, should I use any kind of finish for a micarta handle? I buffed it out and it looks like I would not need one but I've never used this material before.
second, what kind of oil should be used to preserve a knife blade, its 1095 and I don't want it to rust.

Micarta is a phenolic - basically plastic. Buffing is enough but you can wax it if you want to.
I use Ren Wax on 1095 if I want it to be dry right away. Otherwise, I like corn oil (from the kitchen) because it's food safe if you cut food with the knife and because it leaves a little bit of a hard protective coating when it finally dries up ...

Not necessary to apply a coating on these phenolic plastics. As Ray mentions, you can use wax and Ren Wax is excellent. I've also used milder automotive waxes with good results. Not all auto waxes are similar because some have more aggressive cutting abrasives so depending how fine-polished a finish is given, you'll want to apply an appropriate coating. I have waxes-polishes with no abrasive-synthetic, to waxes for heavy oxidation removal. Like abrasive belts, one would have to use succeeding finer applications. (More work than necessary for a knife handle IMO but because handles are so small it is only a few moments more in time.) Flitz also works well but it may streak on some materials.
For 1095, 1084...etc I wipe with a silicone impregnated cloth that is common at gun shop supplies.
*Auto waxes and silicon would not be appropriate for food use-duty.

I have found when you are using a finer grit paper if you do it under running water ( the knife not you )
then you get a cleaner result. Ive never bothered to polish Micarta...........a very fine grit will being up a nice silk finish.............not too fond of a high gloss
