need to figure out why my forge wont weld

I built the Zoeller propane burner just like my freind at work did. I used the same kind of bricks he did. I just dont have the fittings for the oxy or acet, guage so i made my own with a simple ball valve and a guage. I can regulate it but the forge does'nt seem to reach welding temp. It seems to freez alot too. At least my tank does. It's crazy.
Help
Jeff

I don't know anything about the burner you have picked, as I have not heard of it or can not remember it at the moment if I have. It just does'nt come to mind. But hear are a few reason for a poor working forge. Heat lost thur cracks, opening, loose bricks, and the like. You have to keep the heaat in first. Shell or chamber size to burnner output ( btu's ). The shell needs at least some mass. Fiber shells heat quick and cool quick. Tanks should be off floors as thier mass acts as a heat sink and freezes tanks. just set them on some 2x4. As tank freeze they do not supply as much gas. there are alot more reasons, this is just what comes to mind. Good luck Raymond Johnson

If your propane tank is freezing up, that indicates that your pulling propane from the tank quicker than it can convert from liquid to gas. Propane boils (turns to gas) as -32F. If your forge is pulling that much propane (unless the tank is nearly empty) then something, somewhere along the route is out of whack.

Unless your friend is having the same issue with the propane tank freezing up, it indicates to me that there is a problem with TOO MUCH propane going into the forge. If may not sound right, but you can have too much fuel going into the forge, and it will cause the forge to burn cooler. Componets on a gas forge have to somewhat matched for things to work correctly.. the problem with a ball valve is that you don't have the ability to control volume like you do with a needle valve assembly. A ball will control volume to a degree, but often times not enough so.

I would encourage you to purchase a 0-30psi adjustable regulator and a propane needle valve. Where I live the regulator is about $30 and the propane needle valve is about $15. By taking the time to play around with what you have you MIGHT be able to find the sweet spot, but I suspect you'll spend more time playing with things than forging each time you fire up the forge.

Sounds great to me. I was half awake when I made my last post. Good luck with it all and don't forget to be safe. I'm going back to sleep now, ok maybe later, after some cake and ice cream and cookies and doughnuts, OOOOO doughnuts.

Thanks Darren, i will order one in a few weeks!!!! I was told with this burner, I would only need to go to 10 psi max for welding. Would you recommend the 0-17 or larger in your professsional opinion.

Hi Jeff,

In a well insulated forge, the side-arm style Venturi burners are good for heating a forge volume of about 350 cubic inches up to forge welding temperatures...the pressure you'll need to achieve this will depend on how well you have insulated your forge, but I've seen it take anywhere from 5 - 30 psi...really depends on your particular forge. Given that the 0-30 psi regulators only cost $6 more than the 0-17 psi and allow you to add a pressure gauge if you want, I'd recommend that you get a 0-30 psi regulator for your forge...

Hi Jeff, Thanks for ordering one of our regulators, we appreciate your business! Let me know how things work out for your forge, my guess is that it'll all work pretty smoothly now.

I hope you sell out at the show!

-Darren
