newbie
I also am contemplating my first knife kit and am wondering if it's best to start with a fixed blade or can one start right off with a folder. I prefer folders as that's what I collect. I'm no stranger to a wide variety of tools, so that is not an issue.

You can start with folders and stay with them ;your whole carrer. We have a gentleman in the guild that makes folders from scratch and that is what he loves to make.I think kits are a good place to start but if you could go to a school like the north carolina guild has at montgomery jr college, for 4 days you can start on your own custom knifes. It is just my opinion and I know there are smarter guys on here then me,but you can do it either way.
