Third steel to go with L-6 & O-1

Well, a person has to stop reading and start posting some time...

I've got some L-6 & O-1 for a damascus billet. I figure the L-6 will be very light colored and the O-1 pretty dark. I need more steel to make up a decent sized billet and would like to use a steel that will both work with these two (forge, HT, & Temper) and be inbetween them for color. Would someone tell me what steels I could use, please?

L-6 is going to be fairly grey. The only thing else you could use that would have different contrast is nickel, since it doesn't harden, it will be able to heat treat just fine with those. If you need more steel to make up a billet, why don't you just buy more? Are you talking about steels that you already have? If so, what do you have?

Mike, myself I'd opt for getting some more of the same, and making up your billet from that. Those two steels have a nice contrast already. Or you could get some more 0-1, and double up on the 0-1 bars in the stack. I have some 0-1 and L-6 on the shelf and I'm getting ready to do the same thing you are. Post some photos here and in the Damascus Forum when you get going. In fact you might post this thread there anyway. Some of the guys on that forum may not always read this one. Good luck with your project!

Larrin & Robert,

It is steel I already have and all I've got is a few 1/8" x 1" pieces of the O-1 and 5/64" x 1" L-6, plus some leaf spring... all of it scrounged. I need to avoid buying stuff but I need to know what to look for.

I'll run the question over to the 'damscus forum', Robert. Thank you for the advice and thank you both for the help.

I know nearly crap-all about damascus-making, but woudl a combo of O1, 1095 and L6 work ? I believe Thunderforged damascus uses O1 and 1095 as part of their mix and the contrast looks decent. Jason.

Thunderforged uses nickel along with thte 1095 and O1, my guess is that the 1095 and O1 don't have any contrast. O1 is a very dark steel when etched.
