D2 and heat treating
I'm looking to use some steel other then 440c (which I'm using now, and sending out for heat treating) and people have mentioned 1084 and 1095 (which for some reason seems be hard to get in Canada..)
I've also looked at D2 (which I can get quite easily).. the questions I have about D2 (I've tried to search but using "d2" is to short,.) 1) is it heat treat'able in a home built forge like 1084 and 1095 (using the magnet trick??) 2) how hard is it, in an annealed state, compared to 440c and 1095.. Thanks.. __________________ Custom Knife Creations |

D2 is not suitable for HT in a home built forge for most people. It can be forged but really requires an expert's touch to do it. D2 is almost a stainless steel and needs to be held at a precise high temperature for an extended length of time which is generally not going to happen with a forge.
We have some Canadian members who might be able to recommend a local steel for you. If they don't, you can buy 1095 and 1084 in small quantities from US knife supply houses. It's cheap enough that the shipping charges should be tolerable ... |
