I'm surprised you've received the mail. I'll start posting my WIP tomorrow. Tell me if you have a milling machine. |

Got mine too Don. You didn't have to drop it off in person. Now the pressure's on. No mill here.
Thanks much, Craig |

Do I need to include a silver soldering lesson here? Those of you who will need to silver solder, please tell me now so I can plan a lesson. If I were to silver solder this knife, I'd probably use a kit including the wire solder and flux from Sta-Brite. The low temperature kit is available from industrial supply houses or from some of the Knifemakers Supply Companies. I haven't studied Tony Bose's site yet, but I think he may be demonstrating silver soldering. Somebody who needs to silver solder, check out his tutorial listed in a previous post and please let me know. |

I just went to Tony's site and looked at a few of his photos. Yes, he is demonstrating how he solders the bolsters to the liners.
He also is using a small piece of metal with a saw slot in it to line up the bolsters on each side with each other. This is the same way we'll use the aid I posted photos of. Hey, why am I doing this???? If you're going to do this, you'll also need a couple of spring clips like he's using. I already have a wall full of them left over from my soldering days but I also use them all the time to hold assemblies together while epoxy hardens. |

Hey Don I too received my plans today by horse back , we still use the pony express here LOL.
Another note, Don what if we want to use Damascus for the bolster and liner? Or is this a bad thing? |

Now I really need to know if I need to include silver soldering. Joe says he doesn't need it.
How about the rest of you? Let's hear it! If no one asks for silver soldering I won't include it. I do want everyone to make a knife, though, so speak up if you need it. Tony's little pictorial doesn't explain all the whys and wherefores if you haven't silver soldered before. It needs explanation. |

I'm still waiting for the snail mail to arrive............ And I'm back at work on Saturday (24 hour shift) so, I won't be able to get started until Monday............ I'll just have to catch up, not a big deal.
Don, Do you have AOL instant messenger ? It's a might be nice to be able to get together say on Mondays at 8pm your time (your choice of time and date) to talk back and forth with you about this project. Just a thought.......... BB Don, I could use some help on Silver Soldering, I have tried using med and hard solder before and melted my brass liners. I need to get some soft or low temp solder. No, I don't use IM. I'm way too old for that sort of thingy. Here's what I suggest instead. How about all of us agreeing on a day ( or days ) and time to be on this thread together. I can set up a new sticky so we can post questions and answers back and forth in real time for an hour or so. The next day I can erase all the comments so we have a fresh slate for the next session. I'd enjoy that. Whatcha thinkaboutit? Last edited by Don Robinson; 05-01-2009 at 04:38 PM. |
