Different Folder opening technique - anything new with this ?
I have been using this "different" technique with my one-handed folders for many years. Just came naturally. I had a fellow knife knut comment that he's never seen anyone do THIS before.
I did some photos - have a look and please let me know if this is old news or is this indeed something different. Bottom line is it works for me ! Thanks in advance. Jason. __________________ JASON CUTTER BLADEART Jason Cutter @ Dr Kwong Yeang Knifemaker, Australia (Matthew 10.16) |

It's new to me. I tried it just now myself and I can see how it might work for someone with more dexterity than I have but, for me, it was a slow operation.
Normally, I open my knife exactly as you do except that my index finger is on the other side of the knife. My little finger is pulling the butt of the knife into my palm instead of the index finger as you do it. In your pics, I see that your pinky finger is not on the handle as your other fingers are, but if it was, the grip would be the same as mine (if you moved your index finger to the other side). Like you said though, it works for you and that's all that really counts ...... |

Your way was very oxword for me, I tried several times.
I open more like Ray does with my index finger on the other side of the frame. I recognized the knife right away, the Kershaw Vapor by Ken Onion is my EDC, I never leave home with out it. as a matter of fact i have a trademark on that very technique,it is called the The Booger Flick,im sorry but you will need to cease using that technique and send five dollars for every time you have used it to avoid further legal action.

Booger Flick !!
It might be just me that the "conventional" technique doesn't work for. I have had several incidents where when opening the knife, the thing has dropped out of my hand or gone flying across the room. For everyone else, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Ray, I think I have LESS DEXTERITY than most. I am one of the most accident prone blokes around, might explain why I had to develop a different method to suit me. For me, this method is extremely quick. I took a digital movie on my camera to demonstrate the speed, but it worked out to be 2.0Megabytes for a 5second shot. The important thing is that it works well for you. It's probably just a matter of how we learn in the first place for most of us. I have seen other methods, like holding the blade and snapping the handle open ......
