Greetings. New Member -Big Question

Greetings. I just joined today. I found this forum through Google.

I recently was given my father's entire collection of knives. They need to be sold. He is 81 and not doing too well and needs to sell-off some of his possessions. I figured this would be a good place to start. As much as I'd like to keep them, I can't.

I just brought 5 fairly large boxes into my home & I'm just about to go through them. I believe some have receipts & I know almost all, if not all, have never been out of their boxes.

These aren't cheap knives, I know that much. My father's taste outweighed his bank account at times. With that said, I'm looking for some guidance. I'm not a kid. I'm a 43 year-old professional. I am member in excellent standing, on other types of forums.

I live North of Boston in a small sea coast town called Ipswich.

I will go through the boxes and start listing the names of the companies. I know many of them have beautiful handles made of things like elk horn and other beautiful things of that nature. He's given me some over the years as birthday and Christmas gifts.

Thank you for reading this and please feel free to give me any advice.

Thank you,
Derek B. Cooper

73 views & no replies. No welcome either...

Maybe I started in the wrong area, but I didn't see a New Member thread.

If you Re reading this, can you try to point me in the right direction on this forum?

Thank you!

Thanks Rob. I'm doing a ton of research. The people over at Russell were pretty helpful.
I'm going to start listing some on eBay today. The knives that I've looked-up under the "completed items" category.

Craigslist is a little sketchy for me. I run a vintage drum shop and I almost always only get people who want to low-ball no matter the quality.

I will try to figure out how to post some here as well.

Thanks for the kinds words about my dad. It's not easy seeing him get too old to work on furniture, or enjoy the things he used to do.

-Derek

I was in awe of how he could afford such a piece of land.

Hope your Dad is doing well, and you've been able to find something useful to move you toward your goal.

A relative of mine who lives in Iowa has a vast knowledge of Ka-Bar knives - if you have any I'm sure he would be interested in speaking with you

You might also try looking at a newspaper type magazine called KnifeWorld at knifeworld.com there is a listing in the back for knife collector clubs called club corner, it lists locations and contact information, also lists events. I'd think someone in your area could be a resource.

I see in the latest issue there is a group in New England called the Northeast Cutlery Collectors Assoc. www.ncca.info - maybe another place to go and ask

Good Luck Sir!

Couple of things you should be informed about:

First, this is primarily a forum for knife MAKERS, not buyers. Yes, there are some dealers here and knives do get bought, but that's not really the strongest opportunity offered by this forum. If you have pictures and specific questions, I'm sure folks here will try to help. But Ebay or other entities are really the place to generate sales.

Second, we get more than our share of scam artists who are trying to sell knives they really don't have. When someone says they know nothing about the value of a bunch of knives they need to sell, it begins to sound a bit like another "story". I'm not accusing you of anything; just saying that it makes people wary about getting involved.

Certain knives are highly collectible - Randalls for example - and are pretty easy to sell. Same goes for certain individual makers. Others - like Camillus - may be great knives but are only worth what a user (versus collector) will pay.

We all hope the best for your father's health and hope that you do well in selling the knife collection.
